Zhang Tielin, 53, who studied for a master’s degree at the National Film and Television School in Buckinghamshire in the late 1980s, was attacked on severalChinese internet forums as an inappropriate choice to play a revolutionary ‘hero’ like Mao Tse-tung.

“It’s an insult to Chairman Mao. I strongly protest and suggest that the relevant State Administration authorities intervene,” said one contributor to ifeng.com, the news website of China’s Hong Kong-based Phoenix TV.

“It is not enough to resemble Mao in outlook and temperament,” said another on a site called the Voice of China, “the actor must be politically qualified in terms of identity. Otherwise it will be a blasphemy to Mao and will hurt the feelings of billions of Chinese.”

The attacks on Mr Zhang are the latest example of rising nationalism in China where the public are increasingly aware of their status as a rising superpower but still keenly remembers its history of oppression at the hands of the Japanese and the European colonial powers.

National sentiments have been running high in recent weeks following a diplomatic spat between China and its old enemy Japan that sparked anti-Japanese demonstrations in several cities across China with minor damage to Japanese shops and cars.

Anti-foreign feeling has been further stirred by the award of the Nobel peace prize to the dissident Liu Xiaobo, a decision which parts of China’s official media have crudely characterised as part of a Western “ideological war” to contain China’s rise.

The £2m series “Red Army Expedition East” will being shooting next month on location in the old revolutionary base of Shanxi in northern China.

It sees Mr Zhang playing a young Mao in the 1930s rally his depleted Communist forces in a war of resistance against the invading Japanese armies while still battling the Nationalist forces of Chiang Kai Shek.

Mr Zhang, who is best known for playing the Qing Dynasty’s Qianlong Emperor (1736-95) in Chinese period dramas, is said to have shed almost two stone to enable him to convincingly cut the slimmer figure of the young Mao.

He was unavailable for comment on Friday, but in a previous interview said he had taken British citizenship in 1997 at the time of the handover of Hong Kong in order to have opportunities “to help the world to better understand China”.

“I hope I can capture the spirit of Mao by closely copying his postures, expressions and speaking tones,” Zhang added in a recent interview on the miniseries, adding that his biggest worry in convincing his audience was not his British nationality, but shaking his typecast role as a reactionary Chinese emperor.
